August GISS Temp up by 0.18°C

GISS has posted its August estimate for global temperature anomaly. It rose from 0.52°C in July to 0.7°C in August. TempLS rose by 0.1°C, which I commented was in line with the rise in SST. GISS once again is jumpier, and like TempLS is back to the high levels of April/May.

The comparison maps are below the jump.
Here is the GISS map:

And here, with the same scale and color scheme, is the earlier TempLS map:

  1. Why does the map show an anomaly of 0.68 for August while the data-file shows 0.7?

    1. Interesting question. The file said 0.7, as WUWT also reported here. It still does, and their pic still says 0.68.

Data is still coming in, and I assume the pic was made at a different time from the file entry.

    2. The 250 km map shos 0.66. It's also possible that the map numbers are from averaging the cells as shown on the map, while the file average does something different.

    3. This is an FAQ. Search for "number in the right hand corner" on the GISTEMP FAQ: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/FAQ.html

    4. DJ,
Thanks. It seems they do do something ifferent, and file number is considered better.
